How Apple Created The iPhone – Full Story

The iPhone was unveiled by Apple on January 9, 2007, after years of rumors and speculation. It was the first smartphone designed and marketed by Apple.

The iPhone revolutionized the mobile phone industry by introducing a multi-touch screen, apps, internet browsing, and more in a single device.

The origins of the iPhone trace back to 2005 when Apple CEO Steve Jobs directed the company to investigate touchscreen devices. He wanted to develop a tablet computer but ended up shifting focus to phones.

Apple worked with companies like Fingerworks to research multi-touch technology, which allows users to interact with the screen using multiple fingers.

This was a breakthrough compared to stylus-based resistive touchscreen phones like the Palm Treo.

Development in Secrecy

The iPhone was designed in utmost secrecy over two and a half years. The project was revealed to the public and media only after it had been completely developed.

The phone had an innovative design with a large 3.5 inch touchscreen and just one button on the front. The user interface was based on intuitive gestures like pinching, swiping, and tapping.

Inside, the iPhone utilized a version of Apple’s desktop operating system OS X to run apps and browse the internet.

Apps could be downloaded from the App Store which opened after the iPhone’s initial release. Important built-in apps were developed like Mail, Safari, iPod, Maps, Notes, Calendar, and more.

Reveal and Release

The first iPhone was revealed at Macworld 2007 with the slogan “This is only the beginning” indicating that Apple saw a lot of potential for smartphone growth and improvement.

When it went on sale later that year, eager customers lined up at Apple stores across the US. It was initially only available in the US before being rolled out to other countries.

Impact and Legacy

Steve Jobs had envisioned the iPhone as a breakthrough internet communication device. It lived up to that vision, disrupting the mobile phone market.

Over the years, new models have added more advanced hardware and software capabilities.

The iPhone helped shape the modern smartphone industry and entire App economy. Features like touchscreens and digital assistants are now standard across mobile devices.

The iPhone remains one of Apple’s most important and successful products. Each new model release garners global media attention and lines outside Apple stores. As of 2022, over 2.2 billion iPhones were in active use worldwide.

An entire ecosystem of accessories, apps, services and more have developed around iPhone users’ needs.

Even now in 2023, 16 years after its debut, the iPhone still leads in many ways when it comes to creating an excellent overall user experience.
