In the fast-evolving world of smartphones, Samsung has consistently pushed the boundaries of innovation, captivating users worldwide with their cutting-edge features and top-of-the-line technology.
With each new release, the Korean tech giant sets the stage for an epic showdown, pitting its own devices against each other in a battle for supremacy.
The stage is now set for an awe-inspiring comparison between the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and its successor, the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.
The Galaxy S22 Ultra, released to critical acclaim, revolutionized the smartphone landscape with its exceptional performance and awe-inspiring camera capabilities.
Now, poised on the horizon, the Galaxy S23 Ultra promises to elevate the smartphone experience to unprecedented heights.
So, is the S23 Ultra simply a slight improvement over its forerunner, or is it more than the sum of its parts?
Here are the main distinctions between these two Samsung phones.
Comparison Samsung S22 Ultra vs S23 Ultra
#1 Design & Quality
The S22 Ultra and S23 Ultra look nearly identical to the untrained eye. Both devices have armored aluminum frames, and the S22 Ultra and S23 both use Gorilla Glass Victus as opposed to Gorilla Glass Victus 2.
The S21 Ultra’s display curve has been lessened on the new phone, making the S23 Ultra much easier to hold and better suited for screen protectors.
Everything else is the same, except for the newer model’s slightly larger rear cameras and a slightly different placement of the power button and volume rocker on the right side.
#2 Software & Performance
The S22 Ultra and other Samsung devices have all been updated to match the One UI 5.1 that was introduced with the Galaxy S23 Ultra at launch and is based on Android 13.
Numerous quality-of-life enhancements are included in One UI 5.1, such as a battery widget, a media player that has been redone to match stock Android 13, and others.
Users of the S23 can test out One UI 6 beta in supported nations; the S22 will follow with the stable update when it becomes available.
Both phones have the recognizable S Pen, so all of Samsung’s stylus features and apps are available.
The S Pen is either a useless piece of plastic or, in our case, one of the main benefits of purchasing one. The return of the pen is always appreciated.
If you reside outside of the US, performance will be one of the primary justifications for upgrading.
Although the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 used by the Galaxy S22 Ultra in the US had some thermal issues, it performed admirably overall.
Unfortunately, the Exynos 2200, a terrible chip that can’t maintain performance and runs hotter than a neutron star, had to be tolerated by the rest of the world.
# 3 Battery & Charging
The specs are the same for both phones: a 5,000mAh battery with a 15W wireless and 45W wired charging capacity.
Additionally, both phones are capable of 4.5W of reverse wireless charging power sharing.
Despite having the same specifications, the experience in real life is very different. The S22 Ultra couldn’t maintain 45W for very long because it had thermal problems while charging.
The S23 Ultra, in contrast, has a new cooling system that enables it to maintain maximum charging speeds for a much longer period.
My S23 Ultra can charge from 20 to 100% on a 45W adapter in about 35 minutes, while my Exynos 22 Ultra would require about an hour to do so while remaining cool to the touch.
#4 Cameras
The Ultra phone’s most crucial component is its camera, and neither phone falls short.
The Galaxy S22 Ultra features a 40MP autofocus selfie camera, a 108MP main camera, two 10MP telephoto lenses with 3X and 10X magnification, and a 12MP ultra-wide lens with a macro mode.
Except for the selfie and primary cameras, the S23 Ultra has the same cameras.
With the other S23 series members, the selfie camera now has a brand-new 12MP sensor with autofocus.
The 12MP unit should take better photos, especially in low light, despite having a sensor that can fit into a hole punch despite having a lower megapixel count.
#5 Price
The S22 Ultra can be found ranging from $800 – $1200 based on sale and the S23 Ultra is at $1200.
So, which should you go for?
The decision should ultimately be based on your unique requirements and preferences for a smartphone, as it will become an indispensable companion in your daily life.
However, if we were to offer a recommendation, it would be to consider investing in the newer model.
