Short answer

What does a PS4 error code actually tell you?

More than most people realise. Every PlayStation 4 error code follows the format PREFIX‑NNNNN‑N, and the two-letter prefix identifies which part of the system reported the fault. NW and NP are network. SU is a software update. WC and WS are web services. CE is the general system group — and that is where hardware faults show up. So a code starting NW is almost never a broken console, while a CE code that keeps returning after a restart often is.

The most common code we see, CE-30391-6, is a good example: it usually means the console has lost its date and time, and the underlying cause is frequently a dead CMOS battery on the board. That is one of the cheapest repairs on a PS4 — and almost nobody knows it.

Why this works

Sony's error codes are structured: a two-letter facility group, a five-digit number and a check digit. The facility group is documented and consistent, which means the prefix alone reliably tells you which subsystem raised the fault — even for codes nobody has written a public explanation for. That is what the decoder uses.

CE-30391-6

The console cannot start the application, and it is usually tied to the system losing its date and time.

What is actually happening

The PS4 keeps time using a small CMOS battery on the motherboard — the same CR2032 cell you find in a PC. When that battery dies, unplugging the console for even a few seconds makes it lose the date entirely, often resetting to 1970. Games then refuse to launch because the licence check cannot validate against a nonsense date.

Try this first, in order

  1. Set the date and time manually in Settings → Date and Time, or set it to update over the internet.
  2. Sign out of your account, sign back in, and relaunch the game.
  3. Update the system software to the current version.

The tell: if the console works fine until you unplug it, then loses the date and throws the error again, the CMOS battery is dead. It is a genuinely cheap part and a straightforward bench replacement — one of the least expensive PS4 repairs there is. Bring it in and we will confirm it for free.

CE-30035-1

Reported as a temporary condition — the system asks you to try again after a while.

Usually clears on its own. Restart the console, check the PlayStation Network status page, and retry. If it persists across restarts and days, treat it as a storage or system-software issue rather than a transient one.

CE-33743-0

Connection to the server failed.

Network side, not hardware. Test your connection in Settings → Network → Test Internet Connection, restart the router, and check PSN status. A console that games offline perfectly well is not broken.

CE-34878-0

A general application crash.

The single most common PS4 code. Restart the game, then the console. Make sure both the system software and the game are fully updated. If it only happens with one title, it is that title. If it happens across everything, look at storage health.

The HDMI port question, answered properly

A damaged HDMI port is the most common hardware repair we do on PS4 and PS5 alike, and it is easy to identify once you know what to look for. Three tells:

  • The plug feels loose in the socket, or wobbles more than it used to.
  • The picture cuts in and out when you touch the cable — that is a physical connection failing, not a software handshake.
  • No video on any screen with a cable you have confirmed works elsewhere.

If it works on one TV but not another, that is more likely an input or HDCP handshake issue and worth ruling out first. Port replacement is board-level soldering work — it is not something to attempt at home, and it is not something every shop can actually do.

Before you spend anything

Safe checks that cannot make it worse.

None of these require opening the console. No heat, no soldering, no reflow. Those are exactly where DIY turns a repairable PS4 into a parts donor.

  1. 01

    Confirm the display chain

    Known-good HDMI cable, different port on the TV, manually switch inputs, then power cycle both. If the picture drops when you touch the cable, stop — that is a hardware answer already.

  2. 02

    Use Safe Mode carefully

    Restart System, Change Resolution and Rebuild Database are non-destructive and worth trying. Initialize and Reinstall System Software can erase your data — if your saves matter and you are unsure, stop there.

  3. 03

    Isolate storage and accessories

    Disconnect external USB drives and boot again. Check you have free storage space. If freezes are repeatable, test one game at a time after a full restart.

  4. 04

    Give it air

    Out of the cabinet, rear vents clear, not stacked on other warm gear. Clean the exterior vents gently — do not blast compressed air into the console, it drives dust deeper.

  5. 05

    Disc first, drive second

    Test two or three discs you know are good, including a Blu-ray if you have one. If every disc fails the same way, it is the drive.

Stop immediately if any of these are true

Burning smell, smoke or a loud pop — unplug it and do not power it back on. Grinding or clicking from the disc drive. Repeated overheating shutdowns even in open air. Liquid exposure of any kind. Continuing to power-cycle through these is how a $90 repair becomes a dead console.

A used PS4 Slim in working order sells for meaningfully more than most single repairs on this list, so an $89.99 HDMI port on an otherwise healthy console is usually worth doing. Where it stops making sense is a console with several faults at once — and we will tell you when that is what we are looking at.

Note that Safe Mode's Initialize option erases everything, so avoid it if you are unsure.

Usually power instability, thermal protection kicking in, or an internal fault. Start with the basics: a wall outlet rather than a power strip, the correct cord, and a full power cycle. If it repeats reliably, it needs bench testing rather than more attempts — repeatedly forcing power on a console that is protecting itself is how small faults become big ones.

The diagnostic is done while you wait. Fan service, hard drives and CMOS batteries are often same-day. We give you a realistic timeframe at the counter rather than an optimistic one.

For a single fault on an otherwise healthy console, usually yes — a working PS4 Slim is still worth more than most individual repairs on this page.
