Operational labels describe how work was recorded. They are not automatically laboratory-style root-cause diagnoses.
The frozen dictionary includes wording such as broken screen, screen, LCD, no display, no image, backlight and digitizer. “No display” does not, by itself, prove which component failed.
This broad operational category includes recognized software wording, Windows where explicitly recorded, restore, virus-related work, account/password work, slow-computer wording and BIOS-related service.
Power / boot / stability, battery, and charging / power input remain separate. Similar customer phrases can lead to different service pathways, so the taxonomy does not collapse them into one number.
Multi-issue tickets can retain secondary tags, but the frozen report distribution uses one mutually exclusive primary category per analyzable ticket so the headline percentages do not double-count service records.
The frozen taxonomy classifies a device only when the source record supports that classification. Generic PC wording does not automatically become desktop, and generic Microsoft laptops do not automatically become Surface devices.
PRM also does not call every PC laptop a Windows laptop. The operational export does not contain a universal operating-system field, so the research uses PC laptop unless the source supports an OS designation.
gaming-flagged records. Gaming is a cross-cutting identifier, not a mutually exclusive device class; comparisons remain directional because the subset is limited.
The frozen process is deterministic: classify the device, require a completed status, then remove records that cannot answer the operational-category question.

Explicit warranty/rework tickets are excluded when the Problem field contains warranty. Undocumented rework is not inferred because the export has no reliable dedicated rework-history field.
Every analyzable ticket receives one mutually exclusive primary category. Recognized additional issues may remain secondary tags but are not summed as separate tickets.
n ≥ 20 may normally carry count + percentage; 10–19 requires qualification; 5–9 is usually count-first; below 5 should not receive standalone comparison percentages.
A separate appointment dataset shows how customers selected or described laptop problems before diagnosis. It is useful for symptom language, not for technician-confirmed repair frequencies.

The initial publication architecture favors evidence depth over page count.
The analyzable laptop-family base is 1,725 records. It includes 283 MacBook display cases, 215 PC-laptop display cases, 28 Surface display cases and 12 Chromebook display cases. Small cells retain the frozen qualification rules.

Within the selected 2,142-record analyzable PRM sample, screen/display hardware was the largest primary operational category at 613 records (28.6%), followed by software / OS / account at 510 (23.8%). These are within-sample service-category frequencies, not population-wide failure rates.
No. The dataset only includes devices that entered PRM's service workflow. It does not include the much larger population of computers that did not seek PRM service.
The frozen process identified 3,593 qualifying candidate records, 3,085 completed/invoiced records and 2,142 completed records that met the frozen Level A operational-category analysis rules.
Diagnostic-only tickets establish that a device entered the diagnostic workflow but do not provide a substantive operational repair category for this analysis, so they are excluded from the category-frequency denominator.

Yes, where the source record explicitly supports Chromebook classification. There are 34 analyzable Chromebook records in the frozen Level A sample, so Chromebook statistical comparisons require count-first and small-sample treatment.
Yes, when they meet the computer inclusion rules. Gaming is a cross-cutting flag rather than a separate device class. The frozen gaming-flagged sample contains 89 analyzable records, so fine-grained comparisons are not treated as strong evidence.
A black screen is a symptom rather than a single diagnosis. Depending on what else the computer is doing, diagnostic paths can involve display output, software, startup, drivers or hardware.
