Polling rate is how often your controller delivers a fresh input report to the operating system, measured in hertz. At 125 Hz a new report arrives every 8 milliseconds; at 1000 Hz, every millisecond. Lower intervals mean your button press reaches the game sooner โ polling delay is one slice of total input lag, alongside game processing and display latency.
This test watches the timestamp your controller attaches to each report and counts how many unique reports arrive per second over an 8-second window. It uses a high-frequency sampling loop rather than the display's frame rate, so it can resolve rates well above your monitor's refresh.
Bluetooth batches reports to save power, which typically caps effective polling near 125 Hz and adds jitter โ the variation between report intervals that makes aim feel inconsistent. A USB cable gives the controller a dedicated, interference-free link and usually doubles or quadruples the measured rate. If your wireless result looks poor, test again wired: a large gap is normal, but a poor wired result too can indicate a failing cable, port, or controller board.
High jitter with a normal average often points to radio interference (crowded 2.4 GHz environments, USB 3.0 ports radiating near the receiver) rather than a controller fault. Move the receiver to a front port or use an extension, then re-test.
Focus on the average and the jitter. An average within 10โ15% of your controller's rated rate is healthy โ timestamps quantize, so exact figures vary slightly. Jitter under 1 ms is excellent; over 3 ms is noticeable in fast games. If inputs feel delayed even with a good polling result, the lag is elsewhere in the chain โ check your display's game mode and the game's frame rate. And if buttons or sticks misbehave rather than lag, run the full controller tester or stick drift test next.
Browsers, OS drivers, and Bluetooth batching can all cap the delivered rate below the hardware's capability. Test over USB in Chrome or Edge with the game closed for the cleanest number. The result reflects what your PC actually receives โ which is what matters.
Many controllers only send a report when something changes. Holding the stick mid-motion guarantees a constant stream of fresh reports so the measurement reflects the true maximum rate.
It reduces one component of it. Going from 125 Hz to 1000 Hz saves up to 7 ms of worst-case report delay. Whether you feel that depends on your display latency and the game โ competitive shooter players notice; most others won't.
Then the delay is probably elsewhere: TV processing (enable game mode), low in-game frame rate, wireless display links, or V-Sync buffering. The controller chain is proven healthy by a good polling result.
