Fast battery drain, short runtime, sudden percentage drops, shutdowns on battery, health warnings and swelling are not the same problem.
Start by separating battery capacity and health from charging and power-input problems before deciding that the battery needs replacement.
Start here
Runtime, battery health, charging behavior and swelling lead to different decisions.
The laptop charges normally but loses charge faster than expected during use.
Check drain vs capacity →The battery still works, but the usable time between charges has declined materially.
Check battery health →Battery percentage may fall abruptly or the laptop may power off with charge still displayed.
Check shutdown pattern →Windows, macOS, Chromebook or vendor diagnostics report reduced health, capacity or a service recommendation.
Use platform tools →The case, trackpad or keyboard area is lifting, separating or bulging.
Stop ordinary troubleshooting →Charger recognition, cable, port, USB-C power delivery and charging-input problems belong to a separate diagnostic path.
Laptop Not Charging →PRM Level A evidence
PRM keeps Battery separate from Charging / power input so a charging symptom is not automatically converted into a battery diagnosis.
7.7% of the frozen 2,142-record all-computer Level A sample.
6.5% of the frozen sample. This remains separate from Battery.
13.1% of the frozen 582-record MacBook subgroup. This is a service-sample distribution, not a MacBook failure rate.
23 of 191 laptop appointments were in the frozen battery symptom cluster; 20 were approved.
“Based on a selected sample of real repair records from Phone Repair & More’s internal operational data.”
Battery and Charging / power input are separate primary operational categories. Their counts must not be combined into a broader “battery problem” percentage.
“These figures describe the distribution of service categories within the selected Phone Repair & More repair-record sample. They are not product-wide failure rates, defect rates, reliability estimates, or probabilities that any laptop or computer model will experience a given problem. The sample consists only of devices that entered PRM’s service workflow and may reflect PRM’s locations, customer mix, services offered, record-keeping practices, and the period analyzed.”
“Percentages use the stated PRM sample denominator only and should not be generalized to the installed population of laptops or computers.”
Fast drain
Fast drain can be a workload/setting problem, a reduced-capacity battery, or both.
Gaming, video calls, rendering, high screen brightness and heavy background activity can legitimately consume more power than light browsing or document work.
New software, updates, always-on peripherals, browser behavior or power settings can change battery life without the battery itself suddenly failing.
If the same workload now produces dramatically shorter runtime, battery aging or reduced full-charge capacity becomes more relevant.
How to know laptop battery health
Third-party “health” percentages can be useful context, but manufacturer/OS tools are the stronger first reference when available.
Microsoft documents the built-in powercfg /batteryreport report, which includes installed battery information, recent usage and battery usage/capacity data.
Apple's Battery Health can report Normal or Service Recommended on supported Macs. Apple says Service Recommended means the battery holds less charge than when new or is not functioning normally.
Chromebook Diagnostics reports battery health, cycle count and electrical current, and includes a discharge test.
Platform-specific health
Microsoft says lithium-ion batteries lose capacity as they age. Windows 11 can generate a detailed battery report, and PC Health Check can show capacity information on supported devices.
Apple recommends using macOS Battery Health rather than relying only on third-party battery-health apps. Apple also separates battery-health problems from charging/adapter problems.
Microsoft's current Surface tools can report full-charge capacity vs design capacity. Smart Charging may intentionally limit charge to 80%, which can look like reduced capacity if you do not know the feature is active.
ChromeOS Diagnostics shows battery health, cycle count, current and discharge behavior. That is more informative than guessing from the battery icon alone.
Dell's current battery-health guidance identifies short runtime, sudden shutdown and abrupt charge-level drops as symptoms that can accompany battery wear, and directs users to BIOS/diagnostic battery-health checks.
Many manufacturers expose battery health through BIOS/UEFI or their support app. Use the device maker's current method rather than assuming one universal Windows battery-health screen exists.
Sudden percentage drops
If the laptop is stable while plugged in but repeatedly powers off on battery—especially at a similar displayed percentage—battery health and reporting become more relevant.
If the machine restarts with a stop code or system-crash message, use the broader stability path rather than assuming the battery caused it.
Laptop Keeps Shutting Off →Safety stop
Microsoft states that if a battery expands beyond the device's mechanical enclosure, stop using the device immediately and avoid applying pressure or puncturing the battery.
Warning signs can include a lifted trackpad, separated bottom cover, keyboard/chassis deformation or a gap that did not exist before.
Do not press the case closed. Do not puncture the battery. Do not continue ordinary charging tests.
How long should a laptop battery last?
Battery runtime depends on battery size, age, workload, screen brightness, processor/GPU activity, wireless use, background processes, temperature and power settings.
Battery lifespan also varies by chemistry, temperature history and charging pattern. Microsoft and Apple both describe lithium-ion batteries as consumable components whose capacity decreases with chemical age and use.
For diagnosis, compare your current runtime against the same laptop's previous behavior under a similar workload rather than applying one universal “X hours” rule.
Battery longevity
Microsoft and Apple both identify temperature history as important to lithium-ion battery aging.
Supported Windows/Surface and Mac systems may intentionally limit charging to reduce long-term battery wear.
Brightness, GPU-heavy apps, background activity and high-performance modes can reduce runtime without indicating battery failure.
Do not repeatedly force deep discharge cycles as a generic “battery fix.” Modern battery management is designed around controlled charging.
Microsoft recommends moderate charge rather than long-term storage at fully charged or fully drained extremes.
No setting can restore lost chemical capacity. If health/capacity is materially reduced, replacement may be the appropriate service path.
Battery vs charging
Fast drain, short runtime, low capacity, sudden percentage drops, health warnings, battery-only shutdowns and swelling.
Adapter not recognized, charges only at an angle, USB-C power delivery issues, intermittent input, wrong wattage or charging port symptoms.
Laptop Not Charging →Level B evidence
Appointment data reflects what customers selected or described before diagnosis—not the confirmed repair.
The frozen Level B taxonomy contains 23 Battery appointments, including 20 Approved.
This is a customer-language symptom cluster, not 23 confirmed failed batteries.
PRM has no validated appointment-to-repair key for this export, so it does not publish battery symptom → battery replacement conversion rates.
“Appointment data reflects issues customers selected or described before diagnosis. It should not be interpreted as technician-confirmed faults or completed repairs.”
When replacement becomes reasonable
The OS/manufacturer health tools show substantial wear and the reduced runtime affects normal use.
The laptop behaves normally on external power but repeatedly shuts down or drops charge unexpectedly on battery.
Swelling changes the issue from convenience to safety and should be professionally handled.
