Laptop Data Recovery? Protect the Source Before You Try to “Fix” the Drive

Deleted files on a healthy drive, a laptop that will not boot, and a clicking or disappearing storage device are three different recovery situations.

The highest-value first question is whether the storage is healthy enough for software recovery—or whether continued use could reduce recovery chances.

Which recovery situation are you in?

Files were deleted

The computer and storage otherwise behave normally. Minimize new writes and check backups/Recycle Bin/Trash before recovery software.

Laptop will not boot

The storage may still be healthy. First determine whether the drive is detected and whether diagnostics or recovery tools can access it.

Drive clicks, disappears or fails tests

Physical or hardware failure becomes more likely. Reduce continued use and prioritize preservation over repair attempts.

PRM repair-record evidence

PRM records group storage, data and memory work together

Storage / data / memory

5.5% of the selected 2,142-record all-computer repair-record sample.

What the number includes

The 117 records include storage, data and memory work. They do not mean that PRM completed 117 confirmed data-recovery jobs.

“Based on a selected sample of real repair records from Phone Repair & More’s internal operational data.”

“These figures describe the distribution of service categories within the selected Phone Repair & More repair-record sample. They are not product-wide failure rates, defect rates, reliability estimates, or probabilities that any laptop or computer model will experience a given problem. The sample consists only of devices that entered PRM’s service workflow and may reflect PRM’s locations, customer mix, services offered, record-keeping practices, and the period analyzed.”

“Percentages use the stated PRM sample denominator only and should not be generalized to the installed population of laptops or computers.”

Deleted files

Minimize new writes before recovery attempts

Do not keep downloading, installing or saving files to the affected drive if deleted-file recovery matters.

Microsoft's Windows File Recovery guidance says that deleted-file recovery chances improve when you minimize or avoid using the computer, because the space occupied by a deleted file is marked as free and can be overwritten.

No-boot laptop

A computer that will not boot does not automatically mean the data is gone

1

Is the drive detected?

BIOS/UEFI or Disk Utility visibility helps separate boot problems from missing storage.

2

Run non-destructive diagnostics

Use manufacturer storage diagnostics to check for hardware errors before reset/reinstall.

3

Protect the data first

If the drive is readable, back up important files before OS recovery that could erase data.

4

Escalate failed storage

If the drive disappears, clicks, grinds or fails diagnostics, stop heavy use.

Hard-drive warning signs

Clicking or grinding changes the priority

Dell's current HDD/SSD support guidance identifies clicking, grinding or whining from a mechanical hard drive as a sign that can accompany physical/mechanical failure.

Dell specifically advises backing up immediately if the data is still accessible and warns against continuing heavy use of a clicking drive because additional use can worsen the damage.

This is different from a healthy drive where files were simply deleted.

Mac storage

Disk Utility First Aid is a disk-repair tool, not a guarantee of data recovery

Apple says Disk Utility can repair some formatting and directory-structure problems but cannot detect or repair every problem a disk may have.

If Disk Utility reports that a disk is about to fail, Apple's guidance is to back up the data and replace the disk—the disk cannot be repaired by First Aid.

If the startup disk does not appear in Disk Utility or repair fails, Apple indicates that service may be required.

Water / physical damage

Do not make data recovery harder by repeatedly power-cycling damaged hardware

After liquid exposure

If the laptop became unstable after a spill, use the safety-first Water Damage guide before repeated startup attempts.

Laptop Water Damage →

After impact / chassis damage

Physical damage can affect storage connections or the motherboard path required to access the drive. Preserve the source before parts swapping.

Data recovery pricing

What affects data recovery cost?

How much should data recovery cost?

Pricing depends on whether recovery is logical/software-based, a failing HDD/SSD, board/power-path work, encryption, and the amount/condition of recoverable data.

Customer appointment reports

Customer appointment reports are too limited for a useful recovery percentage

Only a few appointments in the sample mention storage, data or memory problems. That number is too small for a useful percentage, and it cannot show a recovery success rate.

“Appointment data reflects issues customers selected or described before diagnosis. It should not be interpreted as technician-confirmed faults or completed repairs.”

Frequently asked questions

Laptop data recovery FAQ

How do I recover data from a laptop?
First determine whether the files were deleted from a healthy drive, the operating system will not boot, or the storage device may be failing. Those are different recovery paths.
What should I do after accidentally deleting files?
Minimize or avoid further use of the affected storage. Microsoft says deleted-file recovery chances improve when you reduce computer use because deleted-file space can be overwritten.
Can I recover files if Windows will not boot?
Possibly. If the storage is still detected and healthy, a non-destructive recovery or backup path may be available. If the drive is not detected or diagnostics fail, the priority changes to storage evaluation.
Can Disk Utility recover data on a Mac?
Disk Utility First Aid can repair some file-system or directory problems, but Apple says it cannot detect or repair every disk problem. If Disk Utility says a disk is about to fail, back up the data and replace the disk.
What does a clicking hard drive mean?
Dell says clicking, grinding or whining from an HDD can indicate mechanical failure. If important data matters, avoid heavy continued use because additional use can worsen damage.
Can SSD data be recovered?
Recovery depends on whether the issue is deletion, file-system corruption, controller/firmware failure, encryption, physical failure, and whether the SSD remains detectable. SSD behavior differs from mechanical hard drives.
Should I run CHKDSK or First Aid on a failing drive?
Do not treat repair utilities as universal data-recovery tools. If the drive is physically failing, clicking, disappearing or reporting critical health warnings, protect the data first and avoid unnecessary write-intensive repair attempts.
Does water damage affect laptop data recovery?
Yes. Liquid can affect the storage device or the board/power path required to access it. If the laptop is unstable after a spill, reduce power-on testing and prioritize preservation.
How much does data recovery cost?
Pricing depends on the failure mode and recovery method. Recovery cost depends on the type of storage problem and the work required. See our data recovery cost guide for pricing factors.
When should I stop DIY recovery and get professional help?
Stop when a hard drive clicks/grinds, storage repeatedly disappears, diagnostics fail, the device has liquid/physical damage, important data has no backup, or attempted software recovery would risk overwriting the source.
