Core research evidence

The PS5 research dataset at a glance

The foundation of this research collection is a frozen selected sample of 1,118 qualifying PS5 console service tickets from Phone Repair & More's internal operational data.

Based on a selected sample of real repair records from Phone Repair & More's internal operational data, the three largest primary categories were:

Frozen PS5 sample

1,118

HDMI

855 · 76.48%

Power / Shutdown

102 · 9.12%

Overheating / Fan / Cleaning

101 · 9.03%

Required interpretation: These percentages describe operational repair-category frequency inside the selected PRM sample. They are not estimates of how often PS5 consoles fail in the United States or globally.

Choose your PS5 symptom

Start with what the console is actually doing rather than assuming which component has failed.

PS5 has no signal or no picture

The console appears to power on, but the TV or monitor shows no signal, no image or a black screen.

Use this when: the symptom is video output.

Do not assume: no signal automatically means a broken HDMI port.

PS5 No Signal →

Concerned about the PS5 HDMI port

Use the HDMI research when the issue is specifically the PS5 HDMI connection, physical connector damage, or HDMI repair rather than the broader no-signal symptom.

PS5 HDMI Failure Report →

PS5 won't turn on

The console has no normal power response, no normal startup, or appears unable to power on.

Use this when: the primary problem is no power.

Do not confuse with: a PS5 that is powered on but has no picture.

PS5 Won't Turn On →

PS5 is overheating or running hot

The console feels unusually hot, airflow may be restricted, dust is visible around the vents, or heat is the primary concern.

Use this when: heat, fan, airflow or cleaning is the main symptom.

Do not assume: every cleaning ticket represents confirmed overheating.

PS5 Overheating →

PS5 shuts off while gaming

The console starts and runs normally, then unexpectedly loses power during or after gameplay.

Use this when: shutdown under gaming load is the defining symptom.

Do not assume: every gaming shutdown is caused by overheating or a failed power supply.

PS5 Shuts Off While Gaming →

PS5 is not reading discs

The console will not read, accept or eject a disc normally.

Use this when: the symptom involves disc reading or disc-drive behavior.

Do not confuse with: a game that is recognized correctly but later fails during installation or software use.

What PRM's PS5 repair evidence actually shows

PS5 Repair Report

What 1,118 real repair records reveal about recorded PS5 repair categories.

The report establishes the full frozen research sample, category distribution, evidence rules, methodology, limitations, and the distinction between customer symptoms and operational repair categories.

Key finding: HDMI was the most frequently recorded operational repair category in the selected PRM sample, appearing in 855 of 1,118 qualifying PS5 console service tickets.

That finding is explicitly sample-specific and is not presented as a PS5 population failure rate.

PS5 HDMI Failure Report

A deeper analysis of the 855 HDMI-category records in PRM's frozen PS5 sample.

The HDMI research shows why broad operational categories must not be overstated:

  • Generic HDMI: 606
  • HDMI Port: 89
  • HDMI Replacement: 86
  • HDMI Repair: 55
  • HDMI + Cleaning: 18
  • HDMI / USB: 1

The most important qualification is that 606 of 855 HDMI-category records use only the generic operational label HDMI.

That supports a finding about the HDMI operational category, but it does not establish that all 855 consoles required HDMI-port replacement.

Evidence system

How PRM separates PS5 evidence

PRM Repair Intelligence uses evidence levels to prevent symptoms, repair categories and diagnoses from being treated as interchangeable.

Evidence levelSourceWhat it can support
Level APRM operational repair recordsRecorded repair categories, actions and operational service data
Level BCustomer appointment symptom reportsHow customers describe problems before diagnosis
Level DManufacturer documentationCurrent PlayStation/Sony troubleshooting and safety guidance

Customer symptom is not the same as diagnosis

A customer saying “My PS5 turns on but the TV shows no signal” is evidence of a reported symptom.

It does not automatically establish “The HDMI port is broken.”

Likewise, an operational category such as HDMI, No Power or Overheating describes how the service record was categorized. It should not be expanded into a more specific root-cause claim unless the individual evidence supports that interpretation.

Symptom ≠ Repair Category ≠ Confirmed Diagnosis.

Methodology summary

How PRM studies PS5 repair problems

The primary PS5 research program uses a selected sample of real PRM operational records.

The frozen parent research dataset contains:

N = 1,118 qualifying PS5 console service tickets

The methodology:

  • separates PS5 consoles from controller repairs;
  • uses service tickets as the unit of analysis;
  • includes invoiced qualifying records;
  • excludes diagnostic-only records from repair-category percentages;
  • excludes explicitly identifiable warranty/rework tickets;
  • normalizes inconsistent operational wording into defined categories;
  • uses deterministic precedence for mixed repairs;
  • and preserves customer appointment language separately as Level B evidence.

The dataset represents a selected PRM operational sample, not all historical PRM repairs and not a population-wide PS5 reliability study.

The research pages and commercial service page serve different intents:

  • Research: evidence, diagnosis, methodology and troubleshooting context.
  • Service: repair availability and conversion.

Troubleshooting a DualSense controller instead?

The PS5 console research dataset excludes controller repairs.

FAQ

PS5 Repair Research questions

What is PRM's PS5 Repair Research program?

It is a collection of original PRM repair-data studies and symptom-focused diagnostic guides built around real operational repair evidence, customer-reported symptom language and manufacturer primary guidance.

The central PS5 research dataset contains 1,118 qualifying PS5 console service tickets.

What was the most frequently recorded PS5 repair category in the study?

HDMI.

855 of 1,118 qualifying tickets—76.48%—were categorized under HDMI.

That is the share of the selected PRM operational sample. It is not a population-wide PS5 HDMI failure rate.

PS5 Repair Report →

Does a PS5 with no signal automatically need HDMI repair?

No. No signal is a symptom, not a confirmed component diagnosis.

Start with PS5 No Signal. If there is a specific physical HDMI-port concern, use the PS5 HDMI Failure Report.
