Your character or camera will visibly move on its own. Calibration may help temporarily, but sustained drift at this level usually means the stick module needs replacement.
Most analog sticks use potentiometers — tiny carbon tracks that a wiper slides across as you move the stick. Over hundreds of hours of play, the carbon wears away and the wiper starts reporting positions that don't match where the stick physically sits. Dust, sweat, and worn centering springs make it worse. That's why drift almost always develops gradually: a hair of camera pull at first, then a character who walks by themselves.
Drift affects every brand. Joy-Cons are the most notorious, but DualSense, DualShock 4, and Xbox controllers all use similar ALPS-style potentiometer sticks with a typical rated life of roughly 2 million cycles — heavy players hit that in under a year.
While your sticks rest untouched, the test samples their reported position dozens of times per second for 10 seconds via the browser's Gamepad API. It then computes the average and maximum deviation from true center for each stick and traces every sample on the circle so you can literally see the wander. A healthy stick draws a dot; a drifting stick draws a smear.

No — once the potentiometer track is worn, drift only progresses. Cleaning around the stick base with isopropyl alcohol or compressed air can temporarily improve contact, and calibration can re-zero mild drift, but worn hardware eventually needs a new stick module.
Early-stage wear is temperature- and position-sensitive: the wiper still makes good contact most of the time. Intermittent drift is the best moment to calibrate, before wear becomes constant.
It hides drift rather than fixing it, and it costs you precision — small aiming movements inside the enlarged deadzone are ignored. It's a reasonable stopgap, not a repair.
