Laptop Keyboard Not Working? First Separate Dead Keys From Settings and Whole-Keyboard Failure

A keyboard problem can be one damaged key, several keys, the whole built-in keyboard, a layout/accessibility setting, a backlight issue, or part of a larger liquid/chassis problem.

The best first comparison is which keys fail, whether an external keyboard works, and whether diagnostics register the key presses.

What part of the keyboard is failing?

One or a few keys

Inspect for debris, loose keycaps or visible damage, then test the same keys in a diagnostic.

Whole built-in keyboard

Restart, compare with an external keyboard, and test whether the issue exists before Windows/macOS fully loads when the model supports diagnostics.

Wrong characters / shortcuts

Check keyboard layout, language and accessibility settings before assuming hardware damage.

Backlight only

Backlight can fail independently of key input. Dell explicitly documents backlight control as a separate keyboard subsystem.

PRM evidence

Keyboard / trackpad / controls

5.7% of the selected 582-record MacBook sample. This is not a MacBook keyboard failure rate.

What the number includes

The 90 records include keyboard, trackpad and control work. They do not mean that 90 laptops had a confirmed keyboard failure.

“Based on a selected sample of real repair records from Phone Repair & More’s internal operational data.”

“These figures describe the distribution of service categories within the selected Phone Repair & More repair-record sample. They are not product-wide failure rates, defect rates, reliability estimates, or probabilities that any laptop or computer model will experience a given problem. The sample consists only of devices that entered PRM’s service workflow and may reflect PRM’s locations, customer mix, services offered, record-keeping practices, and the period analyzed.”

“Percentages use the stated PRM sample denominator only and should not be generalized to the installed population of laptops or computers.”

Safe checks

How to diagnose a laptop keyboard before replacement

1

Restart + disconnect extras

Remove docks and nonessential USB devices, then restart normally.

2

Test an external keyboard

If an external keyboard works, the built-in keyboard path becomes more relevant.

3

Check layout/settings

Confirm language/layout and accessibility options such as Slow Keys or Mouse Keys on Mac.

4

Run diagnostics

Use manufacturer keyboard tests where available before choosing replacement.

Windows / Dell

Dell's current built-in keyboard path

Dell's current laptop-keyboard guidance separates unresponsive keys, input lag, intermittent input, incorrect characters, function-key problems and stuck keys. It recommends checking physical damage/debris, disconnecting peripherals, testing with an external keyboard, checking updates/drivers and running a SupportAssist keyboard test.

Dell also notes that a keyboard backlight issue can exist independently of key input functionality, which is why “keys work but lights do not” should not be treated as full keyboard failure.

MacBook

Apple separates key-input problems from settings

Apple's current Mac guidance says to check power/charge for a completely unresponsive built-in keyboard, and for partial/unexpected key behavior to check accessibility settings such as Slow Keys and Mouse Keys plus the selected keyboard layout.

That makes settings evidence important before assuming a MacBook keyboard needs hardware replacement.

Chromebook

ChromeOS includes a keyboard diagnostic

Google's current Chromebook keyboard guidance recommends restart, Guest-mode comparison, hardware reset and Diagnostics. ChromeOS Diagnostics can test key presses directly, making it useful for separating settings/account behavior from non-registering keys.

Liquid and physical damage

A keyboard problem after a spill is not automatically keyboard-only

After liquid exposure

Start with the Water Damage guide because residue or corrosion can affect the keyboard and other systems.

After chassis/hinge damage

Palmrest or chassis distortion can affect keyboard fit, top-case structure or cables.

Customer appointment reports

Customer keyboard reports are limited

5 keyboard/buttons/input appointments

The defined appointment sample contains five records in this customer-reported group. Under PRM's thresholds, this is count-only evidence—not a percentage.

Appointments and completed repairs were not matched

No validated appointment-to-repair key exists for the appointment export.

“Appointment data reflects issues customers selected or described before diagnosis. It should not be interpreted as technician-confirmed faults or completed repairs.”

Frequently asked questions

Laptop keyboard FAQ

Why is my laptop keyboard not working?
The cause can be physical key damage or debris, keyboard hardware, a cable/connection issue, settings/layout, software, or broader laptop damage. Start by checking whether all keys, some keys, or only special keys are affected.
What should I do if only some laptop keys are not working?
Check for stuck, loose or damaged keys and debris, then test the same keys in a built-in or manufacturer keyboard diagnostic when available. A few dead keys can point to a local keyboard issue but do not prove the exact failed part.
What if the whole built-in keyboard stops working?
Restart, disconnect nonessential peripherals, compare with an external keyboard, check accessibility/layout settings, and use manufacturer diagnostics. If an external keyboard works while the built-in keyboard does not, the built-in keyboard path becomes more relevant.
Can I use an external keyboard to test my laptop?
Yes. Dell explicitly recommends testing an external keyboard to help distinguish a built-in keyboard issue from a broader software/input problem.
Can software make laptop keys stop working?
Yes. Layout settings, accessibility options, drivers, operating-system problems or software conflicts can change keyboard behavior. Hardware diagnostics help separate those from a physical keyboard fault.
Why does my laptop type the wrong characters?
Check the selected keyboard layout and language before replacing hardware. Apple and Dell both document layout/settings checks for unexpected key behavior.
Why are my function keys not working normally?
Function-key behavior can depend on Fn mode, BIOS settings or model-specific controls. A function-key problem is different from a physically dead key.
Can liquid damage make a laptop keyboard stop working?
Yes. Liquid can affect the keyboard and other internal systems. A post-spill keyboard symptom does not prove the damage is limited to the keyboard.
Should I remove laptop keycaps myself?
Key mechanisms vary by model and can be fragile. Cleaning visible debris is lower risk; aggressive keycap removal can damage scissor mechanisms or mounts.
When should a laptop keyboard be professionally repaired?
Service is appropriate when physical damage is visible, multiple built-in keys fail diagnostics, liquid exposure occurred, the keyboard cable/top case is suspected, or the issue persists after settings/software checks.
