Vertical lines, horizontal bands, colored streaks, flickering blocks or display artifacts on a MacBook are useful symptoms.
They are not, by themselves, a complete diagnosis. Start with where the lines appear, when they appear and what changes them.

Safe checks
Observe whether lines appear before the Apple logo, at the logo, during progress, at login or only after the desktop loads.
View the screenshot elsewhere. A normal file while the built-in screen shows lines makes the physical internal display path more relevant.
Compare whether the same artifact is present outside the built-in display.
Note whether the symptom changes at normal working angles. Do not force or repeatedly flex the display.
If the Mac is stable and backed up appropriately, keeping macOS current is a reasonable software-maintenance step.
When hardware is suspected, Apple Diagnostics can add structured hardware evidence and may provide a reference code.
Software-loaded state
Apple says Safe Mode can help identify whether an issue is caused by software that loads as the Mac starts up.
Software-loaded state becomes more relevant. The result does not identify which app, extension or software component is responsible.
Hardware or another lower-level display/output path remains relevant. The result still does not identify the exact failed part.
Use Apple's current procedure for the Mac you actually have rather than following a generic key sequence.
Hardware evidence
Apple Diagnostics is designed to help identify possible Mac hardware problems.
Apple advises shutting down the Mac, disconnecting unnecessary external devices and using the startup procedure appropriate for Apple silicon or Intel.
Apple says users are asked to choose a specific diagnostic to run, such as a diagnostic for the built-in display, keyboard or trackpad.
A diagnostic result is additional hardware evidence. It should be interpreted with the visible symptom and physical history rather than used as a substitute for inspection.
External-display comparison
No. A normal external image shows that the Mac can generate a usable image outside the built-in display. That makes the internal display pathway more relevant.
The internal path can include more than one component or connection, so professional diagnosis should determine what actually requires repair.
If artifacts also appear on the external display, the built-in panel is less likely to be the only possible area involved.
Mechanical clue
Slowly observe whether the lines change as the MacBook is opened to normal working positions.
If the symptom appears, disappears, flickers, changes color or changes shape at certain positions, tell the technician. That is useful evidence about the relationship between the symptom and the display assembly's physical position.
Do not repeatedly flex the display and do not force the hinge beyond normal movement.
Physical history
A symptom beginning immediately after impact makes physical display damage more relevant. Visible cracking is not required for every kind of display damage.
The absence of cracked glass does not prove the display hardware is healthy—and does not prove the display is the cause either.
Stop treating the issue as routine software troubleshooting. Repeated power cycling or charging can worsen some liquid-related electrical conditions.
If startup and normal use are clean until sleep/wake, software/display-state behavior becomes more relevant. Restart, current macOS, Safe Mode and Apple Diagnostics can add evidence.
Level B evidence
The customer-language evidence is broader than MacBook and remains separate from confirmed Level A repair data.
