Computer Screen Black but the Computer Is On? Start Here

If the computer has lights, fan activity, keyboard illumination, startup sounds or other signs of power—but nothing usable appears on the screen—you are dealing with a different diagnostic problem from a computer that will not turn on at all.

This guide helps identify where the display path is failing before assuming the screen itself needs replacement.

Does the computer show signs of power?

This page owns the powered-but-no-usable-display state. True no-power belongs elsewhere.

NO No lights, no fans, no sound, no response? Use the no-power guide.

Laptop Won’t Turn On →

YES — signs of power are present

Continue here if you observe power LEDs, keyboard lighting, fan movement, startup sounds, drive activity, a brief screen flash, a manufacturer logo, Windows startup sounds or an external monitor receiving an image.

The more precisely you identify when the image disappears, the narrower the diagnostic path becomes.

Black-screen states

Which black-screen state are you seeing?

1

Nothing ever appears

Lights or fans indicate power, but there is never a manufacturer logo or usable image.

Start reversible display checks →
2

Logo appears, then black

The computer has already produced video output. Startup, software or graphics/output states become more relevant.

See the next path →
3

Black after sign-in

If Windows or another OS loads before the image disappears, software/display-output diagnosis becomes more relevant.

Windows black-screen context →
4

Black screen with cursor

A visible cursor proves that the system is producing some image output.

See Windows-specific context →
5

External display works

This narrows the problem toward the internal display path but does not automatically prove the panel itself failed.

Interpret the result carefully →
6

No image anywhere

If both built-in and external displays remain black, broader output/startup/hardware diagnosis may be needed.

See the broader path →

Black screen is an observable state, not a component diagnosis

“The screen is black” tells us what the user sees. It does not automatically tell us why.

A black-screen symptom can involve display hardware, output/configuration, graphics drivers, software state, startup/boot, firmware, power/stability or other hardware depending on when and how it appears.

PRM therefore starts with the stage at which the image disappears—not with a guessed replacement part.

PRM Level A evidence

What the repair data actually shows

The frozen data provides relevant context, but it does not contain a dedicated “black screen” root-cause field.

613

Screen / display hardware

28.6% of the frozen 2,142-record analyzable all-computer Level A sample.

This category includes broader operational wording such as broken screen, screen, LCD, no display, no image, backlight and digitizer.

178

Power / boot / stability

8.3% of the same frozen all-computer sample.

This category includes no power, not starting, not booting, rebooting, shuts off and related wording.

“Based on a selected sample of real repair records from Phone Repair & More’s internal operational data.”

PRM cannot take the black-screen search query and claim that a particular percentage is caused by screens, drivers, motherboards, batteries or another component. The dataset does not support that conversion.

“These figures describe the distribution of service categories within the selected Phone Repair & More repair-record sample. They are not product-wide failure rates, defect rates, reliability estimates, or probabilities that any laptop or computer model will experience a given problem. The sample consists only of devices that entered PRM’s service workflow and may reflect PRM’s locations, customer mix, services offered, record-keeping practices, and the period analyzed.”

“Percentages use the stated PRM sample denominator only and should not be generalized to the installed population of laptops or computers.”

Safe first checks

Six checks before assuming the screen is broken

Start with reversible checks. Do not jump straight to reset, reinstall or hardware replacement.

01

Confirm actual power

Look for lights, fan activity, keyboard illumination, startup sounds or another clear sign the computer is operating.

02

Increase brightness

A display set to very low brightness can appear blank in some conditions.

03

Disconnect display accessories

Remove unnecessary external monitors, docks, USB-C hubs and adapters, then check the built-in display again.

04

Check desktop monitor path

Confirm monitor power, input selection, cable seating and video connection on desktop systems.

05

Windows graphics wake shortcut

On Windows, Microsoft recommends Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B for certain blank-screen states.

06

Try Ctrl + Alt + Delete

If the Windows security screen appears, the system and display are producing an image at that stage.

Before doing anything destructive

Do not immediately factory-reset, reinstall the operating system, erase a Chromebook, replace the screen or replace the motherboard. Start with reversible observations first and consider important data before recovery/reset procedures.

Windows context

Why is my Windows computer screen black?

Microsoft recognizes several blank-screen states rather than treating “black screen” as one failure.

Blank screen with cursor

A visible cursor proves that Windows is producing at least some display output. Microsoft notes that stalled Windows processes or driver issues can be part of this state.

Blank screen at login

Display-output configuration or profile/software conditions can enter the troubleshooting path.

Blank screen after an update

Driver or update-related conditions may need investigation.

Blinking cursor

Microsoft notes that some blinking-cursor states can indicate firmware cannot locate a boot device.

External-display test

Does an external monitor prove the laptop screen is bad?

No. If an external display works while the internal laptop screen stays black, the result helps establish that the computer can generate usable output somewhere.

That makes the internal display pathway more relevant, but the path can include the display assembly, backlight, internal display cable, connector, board-side circuitry, firmware, configuration or another device-specific condition.

The external-monitor test narrows the tree. It does not always identify the final branch.

Device-specific context

Mac, Chromebook, Dell and desktop black-screen paths

Why is my Mac screen black?

Apple separates a Mac that does not turn on from one that appears powered but starts to a blank screen. A powered Mac with a blank screen follows a startup/display diagnostic path rather than automatic screen replacement.

Why is my Chromebook screen black?

PRM has 34 analyzable Chromebook Level A records across all categories, including 12 primary screen/display records. That display cell is small-n and does not support Chromebook failure-rate claims.

Why is my Dell laptop screen black?

Dell separates no-video/display troubleshooting from no-power diagnosis and uses steps such as brightness checks, external-display testing and built-in diagnostics where supported.

Desktop computer with a black monitor

Desktop diagnosis includes a separate display device. Confirm monitor power, input selection, cable seating and whether the monitor shows “No Signal” or no power at all.

Level B evidence

What customers report before diagnosis

Customer symptom language helps describe the problem as experienced, but it is not technician-confirmed Level A evidence.

52 laptop appointments in the broader screen / display symptom cluster
“screen is black on right-hand side”
“screen has lines in it”

“Appointment data reflects issues customers selected or described before diagnosis. It should not be interpreted as technician-confirmed faults or completed repairs.”

PRM has no validated appointment→repair join key, so the 52 screen/display appointments cannot be converted into a black-screen cause distribution.

When to stop

When professional diagnosis becomes more appropriate

  • The computer clearly powers on but produces no image on either internal or external displays.
  • The screen has physical impact damage.
  • There was recent liquid exposure.
  • Image appears only when moving the laptop lid.
  • The display shows severe lines, distortion or artifacts.
  • The computer repeatedly crashes or restarts around the black-screen event.
  • There is burning smell, abnormal heat or visible electrical damage.
  • Important data is stored on the device and reset/recovery steps are being considered.
  • Basic reversible checks do not change the symptom.
The objective is not to exhaust every home troubleshooting procedure.

It is to narrow the problem without creating a second problem.

Frequently asked questions

Computer black screen FAQ

Why is my computer screen black?
A black screen can occur at different stages. First establish whether the computer has power, whether a startup logo appears, whether the black screen occurs only after the operating system loads, and whether an external display produces an image.
Why is my computer screen black but the computer is on?
If lights, fans, keyboard illumination or sounds indicate operation, the issue belongs to a no-display/black-screen path rather than true no power. Possible areas include display hardware, output, drivers/software, startup or other hardware conditions depending on when the image disappears.
Why won't my computer screen turn on?
First distinguish the screen from the computer. If the computer itself has no signs of power, use the Laptop Won't Turn On guide. If the computer is powered but the display is blank, continue with display/no-video diagnosis.
How do I fix a computer black screen?
Start with reversible checks: confirm power, increase brightness, disconnect unnecessary displays/accessories, verify desktop monitor power/input/cables, test an external display where appropriate, and use operating-system-specific basic display troubleshooting.
Why is my Windows screen black but I can see the cursor?
A visible cursor proves that the system is producing some display output. Microsoft identifies a blank screen with cursor as a state that can involve a stalled Windows process or driver issue.
Can a graphics driver cause a black screen?
Yes, software/display-driver conditions can contribute to some Windows black-screen states, but a black screen alone cannot confirm a driver cause.
Does an external monitor mean my laptop screen is broken?
Not necessarily. If an external monitor works, it makes the internal laptop display path more relevant, but it does not automatically isolate the physical display panel as the failed component.
Why is my Chromebook screen black?
First determine whether the Chromebook is actually powered on. PRM's Chromebook sample is small—34 analyzable Level A records overall, including 12 primary screen/display records—so this guide does not make Chromebook failure-rate claims.
Why is my Mac screen black even though it turns on?
Apple treats this as a different state from a Mac that does not turn on. A Mac that appears powered but starts to a blank screen follows Apple's blank-screen/startup troubleshooting path.
Can a broken laptop screen be black without visible cracks?
Yes, physical cracks are not required for every possible display-hardware problem. However, a black display is not enough to prove that the panel itself has failed.
How much does it cost to fix a computer black screen?
Black screen is a symptom, not a single repair. Pricing depends on the actual diagnosis. Current service pricing belongs on PRM's commercial Laptop Screen Replacement, Laptop Repair or Computer Repair pages.
