Stick drift has two distinct causes. The first is miscalibration: the analog sensors still work, but the stored center point no longer matches where your sticks physically rest. This develops from normal wear and produces mild, constant drift — and it's exactly what this tool cures, often permanently. The second is hardware wear: the potentiometer's carbon track is physically worn through. Calibration can re-zero a worn stick temporarily, but the readings themselves are unstable, so drift creeps back.
A good rule: run our stick drift test first. Deviation under about 0.10 that stays consistent usually calibrates out. Drift that jumps around, appears only in some directions, or returns days after calibrating means the stick module needs replacement — that's a 30–60 minute bench repair at Phone Repair & More, with a free diagnostic first.
DualShock 4 — both V1 (CUH-ZCT1) and V2 (CUH-ZCT2). These are the most frequent drifters due to their aging ALPS stick modules. DualSense (CFI-ZCT1) — full center and range calibration support. Not supported: DualSense Edge (its removable stick modules calibrate differently), DualShock 3 (no calibration interface), and third-party or clone pads, which are blocked automatically because service commands can behave unpredictably on non-genuine boards.
Use a USB data cable (some charging cables have no data lines), close other apps that grab the controller — Steam, DS4Windows, remote play — and charge the battery. Calibrate on a flat surface, take your time on the range step, and always test the temporary result before saving. After saving, the calibration lives in the controller and follows it to your console. You can verify the fix afterward with the full controller tester.
The tool speaks to the controller with its own built-in service commands — the same ones used when it was first calibrated. The realistic risk is interrupting a permanent write, which is why the tool enforces USB-only, a 30% battery minimum, and typed confirmation.
